European shares started the week on a cautious note, with investors adopting a wait-and-see approach ahead of significant economic data releases from the region throughout the week.

As of 0710 GMT, the pan-European STOXX 600 index remained steady at 514.43.

Key flash PMI data for September from the eurozone is expected at 0800 GMT, while Germany and the UK are set to release their flash PMI figures at 0730 GMT. France’s data will be published earlier, at 0715 GMT.

In addition, European Central Bank board members, including Frank Elderson and Piero Cipollone, are scheduled to give speeches over the course of the week.

In stock-specific movements, TotalEnergies (EPA) rose by approximately 1% after announcing a deal to supply up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel to Air France-KLM.

On the other hand, Germany’s Commerzbank (ETR) saw its shares dip by 4.4% following the government’s announcement to maintain its 12% stake, likely stalling any merger talks with Italy's UniCredit.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca (NASDAQ) shares fell by 1% after a late-stage trial of its experimental precision drug, developed in collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo, failed to significantly improve overall survival in patients with a certain type of breast cancer.
