German business sentiment unexpectedly declined in July, reflecting growing concerns about Europe's largest economy, according to a survey of approximately 9,000 managers released on Thursday.
The Ifo Institute reported that its business climate index fell to 87.0 in July, down from 88.6 in June, and below the 88.9 forecast by analysts in a Reuters poll.
Ifo President Clemens Fuest commented, "The German economy is mired in a crisis."
The current conditions index also dropped, falling to 87.1 from 88.3 the previous month, while analysts had anticipated an increase to 88.5.
Future outlooks have worsened significantly, with the expectations index declining to 86.9 in July from 88.8 in June, contrary to analysts' prediction of 89.0.
