Germany's fiscal space for budgets faces tighter constraints under new European Union regulations, according to the finance ministry's announcement on Wednesday. The European Commission has outlined a four-year adjustment plan for Germany, forming the basis for upcoming discussions later this year.

"The new rules will necessitate more adjustments, requiring a moderately restrictive fiscal policy," stated Finance State Secretary Florian Toncar.

Implemented in April, these budgetary rules grant countries a minimum of four years to reduce deficits before potential sanctions such as fines or reduced EU funding come into play. Germany, following its adjustment plan, must develop a medium-term fiscal strategy to submit to the Commission by September.

Toncar emphasized the need for significant budget consolidation in 2026 compared to the ministry's current mid-term financial plans, with ongoing consolidation expected over the coming years.

"There will be no room for additional borrowing," Toncar affirmed.
